General:
Perennial herb from a woody stem-base; stems erect, 7-60 cm tall; commonly hairy.
Leaves:
Basal, 3 to 10, ascending, 2-10 cm wide, palmately 3-parted, the margins incised on the upper 1/3, sometimes with a few teeth, the lateral leaflets deeply 1- to 3-lobed, incised, the ultimate segments 3-10 mm wide, nearly smooth to silky-hairy; stalks 4-20 cm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a 2- to 8-flowered terminal umbel, or a solitary flower; flower stalks nearly smooth to long soft-hairy; involucral bracts (2-) 3, leaf-like, similar to basal leaves but greatly reduced, bases clasping and more or less joined; petals absent; sepals usually 5 to 9, petal-like, white to cream, often blue-tinged on outer surface, egg- to diamond-shaped, 8-20 mm long, 5-13 mm wide, smooth; stamens 40-80 (100).
Fruits:
Achenes, numerous in a spheric head on stalks 5-14 cm long, the achenes ellipsoid to egg-shaped, 5-9 mm long, 4-6 mm wide, winged, smooth; beaks curved to curved back, 0.8-1.5 mm long, smooth.
